Filming Locations

According to TimesOnline.co.uk, Showtime has ruled out England and Ireland (where The Tudors was filmed) as filming locations for The Borgias. Italy, too, has been ruled out, which I think is unfortunate! The article mentions that the director for the series, Neil Jordan, is the same director behind previous projects for the Borgias, including a film that was going to star Scarlett Johansson. I hope they find relatively unknown actors this time! You can read the full article at the link.

[I]t was confirmed last week by Faye Katz, vice-president for entertainment public relations at Showtime, that Ireland, England and Italy had all been ruled out as locations, and a decision on where filming would take place would be made in a few weeks.
Kevin Moriarty, managing director of Ardmore Studios, said he had not been informed of any decision on the shooting location, adding: "Ardmore would be a good location. With the Tudors being shot here, Showtime are well aware of what can be done here."

However, Moriarty said: "We had the type of location that works for something like The Tudors. The Borgias would have a different kind of look, so they may have to take that into consideration."

Welcome to The Borgias on Showtime blog. Because the series has yet to be filmed, I am starting off with a simple blog. So far, Jeremy Irons is the only actor cast in The Borgias, which will be written by The Tudors' Michael Hirst and is scheduled to start filming this summer. Jeremy Irons, 61, will play the lead role in a Showtime series about the sinister Italian Renaissance dynasty the Borgias.

Showtime announced Irons will star as Rodrigo Borgia in 10 episodes as 'the cunning, manipulative patriarch of the Borgia family who ascends to the highest circles of power within Renaissance-era Italy'.

The Borgias will replace The Tudors, which ends its four-year run this year. Debuting in 2011, it will be helmed for the first two episodes by Neil Jordan, creator of The Tudors.

Showtime, for its part, is promising wickedness. The network said:'Having blazed a trail with the awardwinning The Tudors, we wanted to continue to offer our audience a period drama as wicked, witty, and utterly compelling - and that's what The Borgias will be.'
